Portico Books opened in June 1996 as an independent bookshop in Pennant Hills, Sydney. It specializes in a fine selection of books on the Catholic Faith, Family and Parenting, Social Issues and a range of General and Children’s Literature.
With only a small box of books, "the bookshop" began in 1991 as a voluntary service to parents within a local school. A need and a real interest was discovered and so demand grew outside the school community and the "bookshop" developed a mail-order section. Increasing interest prompted the school to offer a very small room located near the entrance of the school chapel for use as a shop.
The name "Portico" evolved from its location and its role. Just as the Apostles met and taught the early Christians in Solomon’s Portico (Acts 5:12), Portico Books has become a meeting place and a source of information on a variety of subjects for those interested in quality reading material with a distinctly Christian viewpoint. Continued growth culminated in the decision to open an independent retail shop.
The customer base now extends to every Australian State and Territory and further afield to Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Singapore.
Today, Portico Books makes a very positive contribution in the broader community providing books and tapes "to enrich the heart and the mind and the soul".
The Portico Selection
Portico’s carefully selected range includes books and multimedia on philosophy, theology, apologetics, catechism, Church history, prayer, spiritual reading, saints, liturgy, priesthood, Church Documents, Scripture, family and parenting, social issues, ethics and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For children there is a collection of religious books including Bible stories, prayer books, Mass books and lives of the saints. Our section of good literature is gradually expanding.
Portico is frequently complimented on its unique range of everyday stationery (cards and paper) which is always very popular with the local shoppers. Added to this is a magnificent collection of religious Christmas cards.
